Celebrating literacy during a pandemic with Eric Walters & Kevin SylvesterAs I write this post, I can't believe 'I Love to Read Month' is almost coming to an end. Where did February go? As I started to plan how our school would celebrate literacy in the month of February, I admittedly felt a bit of trepidation with all of our Covid protocols and not being able to host guest readers in person. However, there turned out to be a silver lining... ESMS was fortunate enough to be able to book two renowned Canadian authors to celebrate 'I Read Canadian Day'. We had the pleasure of hosting Kevin Sylvester, author of books such as Minrs, The Puck Drops Here, Mucus Mayhem and Neil Flambe for our Grade 5-6 students. Kevin's message of never being afraid to make mistakes and to take inspiration wherever you can find it really resonated with students and teachers alike. Kevin also demonstrated his illustrator talents, by showing how easy it is to transform a stick figure into a multi-dimensional figure. Kevin's energy was so engaging and fun! And for our grade 7-9 students we hosted author, Eric Walters. Eric has written over 100 books, some of which include We All Fall Down, Elephant Secret, Don't Stand So Close to Me (which is written about the pandemic) and many others. Eric's philanthropy and charity 'Creation of Hope' is woven into his true to life stories. What I love about Eric's books are that they are written about real life situations with his primary characters being of middle school age, which helps his readers personally relate to the story. We also hosted an online virtual Scholastic book fair, which managed to sell $ 719 in books, which has resulted in adding $ 142 in new books to our library shelves. Thank you so much for all of your support!! I hope you all enjoy your new books. I truly hope that ESMS enjoyed our 'I Love to Read' activities, including our Bingo which will have 3 lucky students winning a $ 20 Scholastic gift certificate for books of their choice. Yours in literacy, Mrs. Stewart
