May 5th marks the day that we remember Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirited people that have been stolen, are missing or have been murdered. What is the REDress Project? It is an art project that remembers the lost women and girls by hanging empty red dresses in many places. In 2010, Jaime Black began the REDress Project, and has collected many dresses over the years. Each hangs emptily to show the absence of the victims. At ESMS we are wearing red and a red dress hangs in our library to remember & mourn for these victims and show that they are cared for and they matter. Find these titles in our library...

The Reading Council of Greater Winnipeg has shared a wonderful 'I Love to Read' calendar that promotes literacy. ~ “I Love to Read Month” is a month long celebration that is held each year to encourage reading, writing, and sharing in the joy of literacy. This year’s theme is “Moving Forward with Hope”. This theme is meant to help readers understand different perspectives, develop compassion and move through these challenging times with empathy. As the world around us begins to recover, we too, need to move forward with renewed optimism as we forge a path of healing and reconciliation.
Please find the attached calendar to participate in our month long celebration of reading. I will have copies available in the library as well. Complete the calendar to the best of your ability and drop it off with Mrs. Stewart or Mrs. Frost for your chance to win a fun filled prize basket! (Please remember to write your name on the calendar - so that we know who the lucky winner is) The Manitoba Council for International Cooperation is giving students the opportunity to win a pizza party for their class!!
For every book students read from the provided reading list, they are eligible to enter the draw (up to a maximum of 5 entries per student, 1 entry per book). Wow!!! ESMS your support and enthusiasm for this year's book fair far exceeded my expectations. I had set a goal of reaching $2000 in sales and we reached $3000 in sales. Way to go!!! With that we have been able to add $ 500 in new books to the library from the product available at book fair and we have extra money to use towards new books in the new year. Your love of books and reading is amazing! Thank you again and I hope you all enjoy the new books you have bought and that will be added to our library shelves.
One of us is lying...
'One of us is Lying', written by Karen McManus, is a murder mystery. There are so many twists and turns. It is so hard to put down because it's so intriguing. It is about four high school students who are framed for murder. While in detention, Simon Kelleher takes a sip of water. He gets a really bad allergic reaction. An ambulance comes but it is too late. The police have reasons to believe that any of the students that were in detention together may by guilty. Was it murder? Or was it accidental? There is a sequel to this book, titled 'One of Us is Next', which may be a clue! I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a mystery. ~ Kaitlin Vanwart, gr. 7 Celebrating literacy during a pandemic with Eric Walters & Kevin SylvesterAs I write this post, I can't believe 'I Love to Read Month' is almost coming to an end. Where did February go? As I started to plan how our school would celebrate literacy in the month of February, I admittedly felt a bit of trepidation with all of our Covid protocols and not being able to host guest readers in person. However, there turned out to be a silver lining... ESMS was fortunate enough to be able to book two renowned Canadian authors to celebrate 'I Read Canadian Day'. We had the pleasure of hosting Kevin Sylvester, author of books such as Minrs, The Puck Drops Here, Mucus Mayhem and Neil Flambe for our Grade 5-6 students. Kevin's message of never being afraid to make mistakes and to take inspiration wherever you can find it really resonated with students and teachers alike. Kevin also demonstrated his illustrator talents, by showing how easy it is to transform a stick figure into a multi-dimensional figure. Kevin's energy was so engaging and fun! And for our grade 7-9 students we hosted author, Eric Walters. Eric has written over 100 books, some of which include We All Fall Down, Elephant Secret, Don't Stand So Close to Me (which is written about the pandemic) and many others. Eric's philanthropy and charity 'Creation of Hope' is woven into his true to life stories. What I love about Eric's books are that they are written about real life situations with his primary characters being of middle school age, which helps his readers personally relate to the story. We also hosted an online virtual Scholastic book fair, which managed to sell $ 719 in books, which has resulted in adding $ 142 in new books to our library shelves. Thank you so much for all of your support!! I hope you all enjoy your new books. I truly hope that ESMS enjoyed our 'I Love to Read' activities, including our Bingo which will have 3 lucky students winning a $ 20 Scholastic gift certificate for books of their choice. Yours in literacy, Mrs. Stewart I am so excited to have been invited to be part of Mrs. Potosky's Grade 5 classroom's Lit Circles. The students started with a book tasting, where they were given a chance to preview each of the following books. They then had to rate the books in the order that they would like to read them. There is a common theme with all of these novels - 'How we can help others and how we can help ourselves'. The students have already identified some of the problems the main characters have been experiencing and are learning how to blog about these amazing books without giving away spoilers. So please enjoy our students commentary, I can't wait to hear what they have to say! Happy blogging!!

Access code to the magazine is: WV9HDNB In the month of December we launched the 'Gift of Reading' literacy activity for our grade 5 & 6 students. Library books were wrapped, with clues about the story line. This optional activity, gave the students the opportunity to open a book that they will be able to read it over the holiday break. If they chose to open a book, they committed to reading the entire book and provide a book review to be handed in when we all get back in January. The students were very excited about opening a gift, not knowing what to expect. Some of the comments have been, "I can't wait to start reading this book", "This is not something I would have normally chosen, but it looks really good!". Happy reading and happy holidays to all! ~ Mrs. Stewart
